Sheryl Lee Ralph, beloved for her role as Barbara Howard on Abbott Elementary, is sharing the secret behind her weight-loss journey—and it’s as simple as going back to basics. The 68-year-old actress revealed she achieved her transformation through natural methods, choosing not to rely on popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic.
In an interview with People, Ralph spoke candidly about her approach to health and wellness, emphasizing the importance of making sustainable lifestyle changes. “I don’t judge. If that [medication] would have worked for me, I would have done it,” she admitted. Instead, her doctor encouraged her to embrace what he called “nature’s good medicines,” including fresh air, sunlight, a balanced diet, exercise, and staying hydrated.
Ralph’s journey began after a routine checkup delivered a shocking revelation: “My doctor told me, ‘You are obese on the inside,’” she recalled. The blunt assessment served as a wake-up call that pushed her to take her health more seriously.

Following her doctor’s advice, Ralph made fundamental changes to her lifestyle. “When the doctors tell you that stuff, you’ve got to do it,” she said. “Because there are certain things like fresh air and sunlight—those are very good medicines.”
Ralph, who is known for her radiant on-screen presence, said her transformation was also motivated by her role on Abbott Elementary. “One time, I got a shot of my behind, and I was like, ‘Oh, hell no!’” she said with a laugh.
For Ralph, health is about more than just physical fitness. She believes in a holistic approach, combining mental, physical, and spiritual well-being to achieve a youthful glow. “The idea of being forever young is mental, physical, and spiritual,” she explained.
While she hasn’t ruled out cosmetic enhancements in the future, Ralph is currently content with her natural look. “My face is my face. That’s my choice,” she said. However, she’s supportive of others who opt for cosmetic procedures. “Do what you need to do for yourself,” she advised. “You feel good about yourself? Good. That’s what matters.”
As Abbott Elementary continues its successful run into its fourth season, Ralph’s performance as the wise and nurturing kindergarten teacher has earned her widespread praise. But off-screen, her health journey is inspiring fans to prioritize their well-being.
Ralph is a firm believer that health is life’s greatest asset. “Your health is your greatest wealth, and too many of us do not pay attention to it until it’s gone,” she said, urging people to make self-care a daily habit.
Through her commitment to wellness and her standout role on Abbott Elementary, Sheryl Lee Ralph is proving that it’s never too late to take control of your health and embrace a better version of yourself.
