Amid the prolonged and contentious trial process, YSL Records has expressed strong support for its founder, Young Thug, also known as Jeffery Lamar Williams. The label took to Instagram to voice their backing for the rapper, who has been embroiled in a high-profile racketeering trial since November 2023.
YSL Records, established by Young Thug in 2016 and home to artists like Gunna and formerly Lil Baby, has found itself at the center of the legal battle. Prosecutors have claimed that YSL is not just a record label but a criminal enterprise, with Young Thug allegedly orchestrating illegal activities in Atlanta. While Gunna, named in the same indictment, was released relatively quickly, Young Thug’s trial has dragged on, becoming the longest in Georgia’s history as of July 25, 2024.
The trial has been plagued by numerous controversies, including the recusal of several judges due to conflicts of interest and inappropriate conduct. Judge Ural Glanville was the first to step down after an off-the-record meeting with a defense team member. His successor, Judge Shukura L. Ingram, also recused herself shortly after taking over. Ingram cited a previous inappropriate relationship between her deputy and Young Thug’s co-defendant, Big Bhris, who was accused of trying to smuggle contraband into jail. Currently, Judge Paige Reese Whittaker presides over the trial, amid hopes that she will bring impartiality to the proceedings.

In the midst of these legal complexities, YSL Records posted a message of solidarity on Instagram: “United States Constitution, Sixth Amendment: ‘In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial…’ #FreeJeffery #BondNow #FreeOurArt #ProtectBlackArt.” This statement highlights the prolonged nature of the trial and the growing concerns over its fairness and integrity.
Young Thug, who has been on trial for nearly nine months, and his attorney, Brian Steele, have repeatedly called for a speedy and fair trial. Steele has emphasized the necessity of an impartial judge, free from any prior engagements with those involved in the case. These sentiments were echoed in YSL Records’ recent post, reflecting the ongoing frustrations and hopes for a just resolution.
As the trial continues under Judge Whittaker, there is cautious optimism that it will be conducted fairly, with decisions based solely on the evidence presented. The support from YSL Records underscores the widespread concern within the music community and beyond, advocating for justice and the protection of artistic expression.
