Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorce in the Black’ Sets Record as Amazon MGM’s Top Prime Video Subscription Driver in the U.S.

Tyler Perry’s latest cinematic offering, “Divorce in the Black,” has not only captured the attention of audiences but has also made a significant impact on Amazon Prime Video’s subscription numbers in the U.S. According to Amazon, the film has driven more sign-ups to the streaming service than any other Amazon MGM Studios-produced movie to date, a remarkable achievement for the platform.

Released on July 11, “Divorce in the Black” quickly rose in popularity, amassing over 498 million minutes of viewership within its first four days on Prime Video, as reported by Nielsen. This impressive figure translates to approximately 3.5 million views, based on the film’s nearly 2.5-hour runtime. The film’s success was further underscored by its debut on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, where it secured the No. 3 spot for the July 8-14 viewing window, trailing only behind Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and Paramount+’s “If.”

In addition to Nielsen’s metrics, Luminate’s movies chart has continued to track the film’s progress. During its third week on Prime Video, from July 26 to August 1, “Divorce in the Black” accumulated an additional 93.2 million minutes watched, maintaining its strong performance and sustained interest from viewers.

Amazon has not disclosed specific subscriber figures or identified the previous record-holder for subscription growth among Amazon MGM films. However, the company had earlier highlighted “Road House” as a top performer, with over 50 million viewers globally within its first two weeks. The Jake Gyllenhaal-led film is also set to receive a sequel, as confirmed by Amazon MGM Studio chief Jennifer Salke during the studio’s inaugural upfront presentation in May.

With “Divorce in the Black” breaking new ground for Amazon Prime Video, Tyler Perry has once again demonstrated his unparalleled ability to create compelling narratives that resonate deeply with audiences, all while bolstering the streaming platform’s subscriber base.
