Lil Wayne fans have often speculated about the rapper’s decision not to perform his hit song “Mona Lisa” from the 2018 album Tha Carter V, especially considering it features a collaboration with Kendrick Lamar. Many believed that the ongoing feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar might be the reason behind Wayne’s reluctance to perform the track. However, Lil Wayne recently cleared up the confusion during a headlining set.
Addressing the audience, Wayne explained, “This is the second time I’ve seen this within my last three shows. Somebody had a sign that said, ‘Mona Lisa’ […] If y’all real Lil Wayne fans, you know I don’t know the lyrics to my shit.”
Wayne elaborated on the difficulty of performing the song live, saying, “So, if you real Lil Wayne fans, do you know I don’t know the lyrics to my shit? Do you know how hard that fucking song is, girl? You know what I mean? I don’t like to rap the words, but I’m going to learn that shit. I’m going to learn it. I’m going to learn. I got you.”

This isn’t the first time the rapper has admitted to forgetting his own lyrics. In 2020, during an episode of Young Money Radio, Wayne discussed this issue with Eminem. He candidly shared, “If you go through my phone history, my Google history and you press L, the first thing that will come up is ‘Lil Wayne lyrics.’ I literally have to Google my lyrics to make sure I didn’t say certain stuff before.”
Despite the challenges, Wayne’s commitment to eventually perform “Mona Lisa” live brings hope to fans eager to see this collaboration performed in concert. His honesty about the difficulty of remembering lyrics underscores the complexity of his music and his dedication to delivering an authentic performance.
