Black Churches Demand Investigation into Al Sharpton’s $500K Donation from Kamala Harris Campaign

A coalition of African American churches is demanding answers and accountability from Rev. Al Sharpton following revelations that Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign donated $500,000 to Sharpton’s nonprofit organization, the National Action Network (NAN). The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI), which represents over 27 million members across 150,000 churches, has called for an investigation into the donations and their implications for ethics within the Black Church and journalism.

The controversy centers on two $250,000 contributions made by Harris’s campaign to NAN in September and October, just weeks before a favorable interview with the vice president aired on MSNBC on October 20. Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings uncovered the payments, which were part of a $5.4 million campaign effort to bolster Harris’s support among Black and Latino voters.

Sharpton, a prominent MSNBC host and civil rights figure, did not disclose the donations to the network or viewers. According to reports, MSNBC executives were also unaware of the financial ties at the time of the interview.

The Washington Free Beacon, which first broke the story, raised ethical concerns about the undisclosed donations, particularly given Sharpton’s dual role as a journalist and activist. NBCI President Rev. Anthony Evans described the situation as a “moral stain” on the Black Church and called for transparency.

“The integrity of the Black Church and journalism cannot be compromised by undisclosed financial dealings,” Evans said in a statement. “Rev. Sharpton must provide a full explanation of these payments and their purpose. The community and his viewers deserve clarity and accountability.”

Sharpton’s relationship with Harris’s campaign has sparked debate over the influence of money in activism and media. Critics argue that the donations, made so close to the election, raise questions about impartiality and ethical boundaries.

Harris’s campaign strategy, however, did not achieve its desired outcome, as she lost the election to President-elect Donald Trump.

The NBCI’s call for an investigation has put pressure on both Sharpton and MSNBC to address the situation. Supporters of the coalition’s stance argue that the controversy highlights the need for greater transparency in media and political advocacy.

  • As the debate continues, neither Sharpton nor MSNBC has publicly responded to the NBCI’s demands for an explanation. The situation underscores ongoing tensions at the intersection of media, activism, and political influence
