Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Pledges Protection for Immigrants Amid Trump’s Return

In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s renewed immigration policies, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson firmly reiterated the city’s sanctuary status, vowing that Chicago will not assist federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) efforts in deporting undocumented residents. Speaking on Tuesday, Johnson expressed Chicago’s unwavering commitment to its immigrant communities, stating, “We will not bend or break.” His remarks follow Trump’s election victory and the announcement of a strict immigration agenda.

Under Chicago’s existing city ordinance, local law enforcement is prohibited from supporting ICE in deportation operations. Johnson reaffirmed this policy, emphasizing that Chicago Police would not participate in federal deportation actions. “Chicago will remain a beacon of hope and strength,” he said.

Trump’s plans include the appointment of Tom Homan, former acting director of ICE, as a “border czar” tasked with leading a large-scale deportation operation. Homan has declared intentions for federal agents to conduct raids across sanctuary cities, including at public spaces like schools, churches, and playgrounds. He further hinted at withholding federal funds from cities like Chicago if they refuse cooperation—an issue the city fought during Trump’s previous term. In a Fox News interview, Homan voiced his determination to “flood agents to the sanctuary cities.”

Johnson, a vocal advocate for Vice President Kamala Harris during the campaign, condemned these plans as “unconscionable and dangerous,” expressing concern over the psychological and social impact on immigrant families. He also voiced fears of broader threats under Trump’s administration, particularly to public education. Johnson criticized the president-elect’s promise to dismantle the Department of Education, warning that such measures could disproportionately impact Black Chicagoans.

Johnson highlighted the city’s resolve to stand against any action that would compromise the safety and well-being of residents. He argued that cooperating with deportation efforts would only deepen fear and distrust among Chicago’s immigrant communities, potentially causing many to avoid essential services out of fear.

“Chicago’s commitment to our people is unwavering,” he said, vowing that his administration would prioritize the city’s values of protection, equity, and opportunity, regardless of the political climate.
