The legal battle between music mogul Dr. Dre and his former marriage counselor, Dr. Charles Sophy, is escalating as Dre makes new allegations, calling Dr. Sophy a “racist” in official court documents. Dr. Sophy, who worked as a marriage counselor during Dre’s high-profile divorce from his ex-wife Nicole Young, is suing the producer for $10 million in damages. Sophy claims that Dre harassed him with threats and offensive messages, which he says have left him in fear for his safety. His lawsuit requests both financial compensation and a restraining order, the latter of which has already been granted temporarily.
The suit alleges that Dre’s frustration with the divorce mediation process spiraled into a nearly year-long period of harassment against Dr. Sophy. According to the complaint, Dre sent intimidating late-night messages, used homophobic slurs, and issued veiled threats. “Rather than using the mediation process as an opportunity for healing, [Dre] chose to take out his anger on Dr. Sophy,” the suit reads.
In early October, Dre’s attorney, Howard King, issued a strong rebuttal, claiming Dr. Sophy’s allegations are exaggerated and unfounded. King further accused Dr. Sophy of “slandering” Dre as part of an effort to turn his own son against him. Dre has since denied making any serious threats of violence, admitting only to cursing out Dr. Sophy over the phone.

In his official response, Dre has escalated the dispute by accusing Dr. Sophy of racial bias, claiming the therapist’s allegations rely on damaging stereotypes about Black men being inherently violent. Dre points to Sophy’s attempt to link him to the “violent behavior of [Dre]’s friends” and his mention of fellow hip-hop mogul Diddy in the lawsuit as examples of racial stereotyping. Dre also denied Sophy’s claims that FBI agents were sent to intimidate him and dismissed accusations of using burner phones for harassing messages.
Dre is now seeking to have the restraining order lifted and to block Dr. Sophy from obtaining any further protective orders against him. As the case progresses, the legal standoff between Dre and his former counselor raises complex issues of defamation, personal safety, and racial bias within the mental health and legal frameworks.
This dispute has sparked a debate online, with many wondering who will prevail in this contentious lawsuit.
