How Afrobeats is Making the World Listen

In 2006, a group of young Nigerian musicians established the Hottest Coalition of Nigerian DJs. The group included both domestic and international performers. Their objective was to promote the music that was popular in West Africa at the time, including bands such as P-Square, 2Baba, and D’banj.

These were songs with electronic and dance music components set to African percussion, as well as undertones of highlife, dancehall, hip-hop, and R&B – origins that may be traced back across the Black expression spectrum. “It was obvious that [Africans living abroad] were craving their own [music], because that’s one of the ways they could connect back home,” explains DJ Neptune, one of the early members.
