McKenzie Ariana Kerry made history in June by becoming the second Black woman to win the Miss Iowa USA title in the pageant’s over 70-year history. The 25-year-old Des Moines native spoke to KCCI, expressing her excitement: “Every time I put on my sash or my crown, it becomes a little more real.”
Historical Achievement
Kerry’s victory marks a significant milestone, with the first Black woman to win the title being Cheryl Adrienne Browne Hollingsworth in 1970. Kerry’s journey to this achievement was not short; she competed in pageants for three years before representing Central Iowa in the most recent competition.
The Importance of Representation
Kerry emphasized the importance of her win for the Black community: “When we think about the figures and faces of our community, I think it’s important that Black women and Black girls can have someone that they look up to. I’m honored to represent myself and my Black history.”

Preparation and Support
Months of preparation led up to Kerry’s crowning moment. She received support from Ankeny jeweler Aminna Taylor, founder of the jewelry brand Twenty-Eight Minna. Taylor’s simple gold mesh hoop earrings complemented Kerry’s appearance, and Taylor praised Kerry’s choice as a significant milestone for her business. “Being able to support the community is awesome but also being able to support a Black woman who is hustling and grinding who has truly created an incredible product is amazing too,” Kerry said.
Elevating Black-Owned Businesses
Kerry has been using her platform to support Black-owned businesses, highlighting the importance of community support and empowerment. “I think we all have the power to elevate the things we care about and to bring other people with us,” she noted.
Looking Ahead
As Miss Iowa USA, Kerry received thousands of dollars in prizes and honors. She now has the opportunity to compete for the national Miss USA title on Sunday, August 4. Kerry’s historic win and her dedication to elevating her community make her a remarkable figure and a role model for many.
