Meghan Markle and Prince Harry added a touch of royal elegance to the 2024 ESPY Awards, attending ESPN’s prestigious event at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on July 11. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were warmly welcomed by Serena Williams, who hosted the evening.
Williams, a close friend of the royal couple, humorously acknowledged their presence during her opening remarks. “It’s actually quite often that I get to be in a room with royalty, and tonight is no exception,” she quipped. “Prince Harry and Meghan are here. Let’s give it up for them.”
She continued with a playful jab, “But please, Harry and Meghan, try not to breathe too much tonight. This is my night, and I don’t want to be overshadowed by the accusations that you guys are taking up too much oxygen, okay?” The camera captured Meghan and Harry laughing at the light-hearted comment from their front-row seats.

Meghan and Serena’s friendship dates back to 2010, when they met at a Super Bowl XLIV event. Since then, they have supported each other through various significant moments, including clothing line launches, tennis matches, podcasts, and weddings. Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, were guests at Meghan and Harry’s wedding at Windsor Castle in 2018.
The two friends were last seen together at the Royal Salute Polo Challenge in Florida on April 12, where Prince Harry participated in the match.
At the ESPYs, Prince Harry was honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service, celebrating his dedication to service personnel and veterans through the Invictus Games, which marks its 10th anniversary this year. The award recognized his ongoing efforts to support the military community through this adaptive sports competition.
