Mia Love, First Black Republican Woman in Congress, Dies at 48

America has lost a pioneering political figure with the death of Mia Love, the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress. She passed away at the age of 48, leaving behind a legacy of courage, history-making leadership, and unwavering service.

Love’s family confirmed her passing on March 29, describing her as a devoted wife, mother, and a passionate public servant who “fought fearlessly for what she believed in.” At this time, the family has not disclosed the cause of death, instead requesting privacy as they grieve.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Haitian immigrant parents, Love’s rise in politics was nothing short of groundbreaking. Her election in 2014 to represent Utah’s 4th congressional district marked a pivotal moment—not just for her state, but for the country. She became the first Black woman from the Republican Party ever elected to Congress, breaking racial and political barriers in a party that had long struggled with diversity at the national level.

Before her time in Congress, Love made a name for herself as the mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah—becoming the city’s first female and first Black mayor. Her leadership style, often characterized as bold and unapologetic, earned her respect even from political opponents.

Throughout her time in public office, Love advocated for fiscal discipline, immigration reform, and education, while also working to promote more inclusive conversations within the GOP. Her presence on Capitol Hill was symbolic for many, particularly young Black women seeking to carve out a place in political spaces that have not always welcomed them.

Mia Love was also known for her appearances as a political commentator and continued to remain vocal about the need for representation and accountability in politics even after her congressional tenure ended.

Tributes have poured in across the political spectrum. Utah Governor Spencer Cox said, “Mia was a force of nature—brilliant, driven, and principled. Her life and career will continue to inspire generations.”

As the country reflects on Love’s life and impact, she is remembered not just for being the “first,” but for opening the door wider for those who come after her.

She is survived by her husband, Jason Love, and their three children.
