WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife, Cherelle Griner, have joyfully announced the arrival of their baby boy. The couple welcomed their son, named Bash, on July 8. Brittney shared the happy news during her appearance on the CBS Sports show “We Need to Talk” on Friday.
Griner, who plays center for the Phoenix Mercury, expressed her profound joy, saying, “He is amazing. They say as soon as you see him, everything that you thought mattered just goes out the window, and that’s literally what happens.”
The birth of their son comes as Brittney prepares to compete with the U.S. women’s national basketball team at the Paris Olympics this summer. She previously won gold with the team in both the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.

Despite the demands of her career, Griner shared her excitement about becoming a parent. “It kind of sucks because I’ve got to leave, but at the same time, he’ll understand,” she said, noting that she plans for their son to call her “Pops.” She added humorously, “My whole phone is turned into him now.”
Cherelle Griner, who had been documenting her pregnancy journey on Instagram, posted in April, “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” with the hashtag #BabyGrinerComingSoon. The couple, who married in June 2019, have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of their child.
Brittney Griner’s personal life has been in the spotlight over the past few years. In December 2022, she was released from a Russian prison as part of a prisoner swap following her February arrest on drug charges.
The incident garnered significant media attention, and it was later reported by The Hollywood Reporter that her detention in Russia would be the subject of an ESPN documentary and a potential scripted series from ABC Signature.
As Brittney and Cherelle Griner embrace this new chapter of parenthood, they continue to inspire many with their resilience and joy.
