A substitute teacher at Woodbury High School in Minnesota was swiftly dismissed after allegedly re-enacting the restraint that led to George Floyd’s death during a high school English class. The teacher, identified as Steve Williams, reportedly performed the act on a student in front of classmates on October 14. This shocking incident has not only led to his immediate termination but has also raised concerns about his role as a police officer with the Prescott Police Department, where he has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
According to Woodbury High School Principal Sarah Sorenson-Wagner, Williams’ behavior came to light after students reported his actions and provided video evidence. “I just knew I had to get him out of the school,” Sorenson-Wagner said, adding that students also recorded audio capturing inappropriate comments made during his class. “I feel like my job is to make sure students know that they are safe and loved, and that didn’t happen on Monday,” she added, calling Williams’ actions “deranged” and “unbelievable.”
The Minnesota Department of Education and the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board have been notified of the incident to ensure Williams is barred from future teaching positions in the state. Sorenson-Wagner emphasized her commitment to creating a safe learning environment, noting that the school is also cooperating with the Woodbury Police Department to explore potential criminal charges against Williams.

The Prescott Police Department, where Williams has served as an officer for two years, released a statement condemning his actions. “The City of Prescott and the Prescott Police Department find the current allegations, if true, to be very disturbing and reprehensible,” stated Prescott Police Chief Eric Michaels. “We in no way condone his actions.”
The incident has stirred outrage among the local community, with district officials expressing their deep concern over not only the re-enactment but also other inappropriate actions Williams allegedly took, such as making sexist and racially insensitive remarks, pointing a gun at students, and invading students’ personal space.
