Angela Simmons, daughter of Joseph ‘Rev Run’ Simmons and a notable businesswoman and reality TV star, caused quite a stir at the BET Awards 2024. Simmons, who attended the event on June 30, carried a shimmery green accessory that at first glance appeared to be a firearm but was actually a purse.
While Simmons considered the bag a perfect addition to her red carpet ensemble, many were shocked by the sight of it. Social media was abuzz with reactions, with some pointing fingers at Simmons’ longtime partner, rapper and music mogul Yo Gotti, suggesting he influenced her bold choice. The bag also drew criticism for being in poor taste, given Simmons’ personal history. Her late ex-fiancé and father of her 6-year-old son, Sutton Joseph Tennyson, was a victim of gun violence in 2018.
In response to the backlash, Simmons released a video explaining her choice and apologizing to those who were offended. She emphasized that she is not a violent person and that her intention was not to provoke or upset anyone.

“I see a lot of conversation around the bag—the purse I wore to the awards. Normally, I don’t address rumors and stuff, but I’m not like that, never been like that. I’m super…Like, I’m not violent,” Simmons said in the video. “I’ve obviously been through a lot in my personal life when it comes to gun violence, and it’s very personal to me.”
She continued, “But I just like the bag and I thought it was cool, and I thought it was a fashion moment. That was it. I didn’t have any intentions of ruffling anyone’s feathers. It seems like everyone, or a couple of people, I’ll say, are a little upset, but I don’t mean no harm. I’m super, super peaceful. I’m sorry if it bothered anyone, but that’s not me.”
Simmons’ apology highlights her awareness of the sensitivity surrounding the issue of gun violence and her commitment to maintaining a peaceful and respectful public image.
